Fast in Solidarity with Guantanamo Hunger Strikers

Susan McLucas

I am participating in a national fast in solidarity with the hunger strikers at Guantanamo, who are in their 7th week of a hunger strike.

Witness Against Torture is amplifying the prisoners' protest by organizing people around the country, many of whom are fasting for a whole week. I'm only fasting 4 days.

I can understand the men at Guantanamo's feeling that their lives are of no interest to them, if they are to be spent locked up, away from their loved ones. Who would accept being held without charges for years on end? Many of the men at Guantanamo have been cleared for release for years now. The Red Cross has said that the vast majority of these men are completely innocent. This is a shameful situation!

I encourage the media to cover the hunger strike at Guantanamo that involves over 100 people, more than half the prison population there. These men are crying out to be heard and we should listen
