Carolina for Kibera (CFK) is an acclaimed international NGO that uses a unique model to prevent ethnic and gender violence and to promote healthcare and youth empowerment in an area of Nairobi known as Kibera, one of Africa's largest slums. In 2000, while an undergraduate at the University of North Carolina and a member of the Marine ROTC, Rye Barcott rented a shack in the center of Kibera, seeking to understand the ethnic violence that had convulsed Africa and might one day confront him in uniform. Working side by side with local residents, Barcott helped develop specific ways to mitigate the tremendous problems faced there every day. A model of "participatory development," CFK was founded in the belief that, with the right kind of support, people in desperate places can take control of their lives and create breathtaking change. Lessons learned by Barcott at Kibera proved vital to him as a Marine Corps officer serving in Bosnia, the Horn of Africa, and Iraq. At the Filipov Forum, Barcott will share stories of sacrifice and courage, failure and triumph, and the ability of a small group of committed people to change the world.
Mr. Barcott will also preach at the 10 am worship service on Sunday September 26th. All are welcome!
