Let's Keep Saying NO to War Funding Bill

It's hard to believe, but the 2009 Supplemental Appropriation is actually worse than before.   And the vote is really close!!

In addition to funding a continued war in Iraq and an escalated war in Afghanistan, the Senate version contains the Lieberman-Graham amendment, which prevents the release of torture photos by amending the Freedom of Information Act. Plus, the Senate version also authorizes $108 billion for U.S.-backed loans to be distributed by the IMF, which threatens to exacerbate the global economic crisis, not diminish it.

The first time around on May 14, 60 House members voted against the war funding.   7 out of 10 Massachusetts representatives (Capuano, Frank, Markey, McGovern, Neal, Tierney, and Tsongas) voted against the supplemental (Lynch and Olver voted for it; Delahunt did not vote).  Now, House Republicans are threatening to oppose the bill because of the IMF provision. To get the money for the wars, there is great pressure on the 60 antiwar House members to switch their vote.

That's why we need to hold them firm!  Our phone calls and delegations made a huge difference to antiwar Congressional representatives earlier.  Now, we urgently need you to make those calls again!

Call the Congressional Switchboard today at 202-224-3121.

If your Representative voted 'NO' to the Supplemental bill the first time, thank them and urge them to stay firm and vote 'NO' once again. If your Representative voted 'YES' the first time, express your disappointment and ask them to change their vote.

Countdown To Zerø: Opening Weekend!

Countdown to Zero

Mass Peace Action still has a few free tickets left!   The film “Countdown to Zerø” comes to Kendall Square Cinema starting July 30th. This controversial film begins to explore the case for a nuclear weapons free world.

Variety calls Countdown to Zerø “a politically urgent picture; it will also literally scare the breath out of what will certainly be a worldwide audience.“

The film does not criticize dangerous US nuclear policies nor chart the path to nuclear abolition, and it accentuates fear of terrorism. But it focuses more attention on the nuclear abolition issue.   After you watch it, tell us what you think of it!
