Entertainment from Argentina, New Orleans and Arlington! We have arranged some wonderful entertainment from movement artists: Argentine artist Rafael Medina, solo guitarist; Gabrilla Ballard, spoken word and guitarist; and Chris Nauman, singer and songwriter from Arlington.
Reason: The disability rights movement started in the 1960s; on a federal level, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 provided comprehensive civil rights protections. This recognized the necessity of guaranteeing full enjoyment of human rights and equality for the disabled. In Massachusetts, new public and private business construction generally must be accessible to those in wheelchairs.
The progressive and left movements, while agreeing in principle, often have lower cost venues in older buildings that are a challenge to accessibility. Encuentro 5, a principal events site for the Boston movement, is not wheelchair accessible; however, recognizing the importance of including all our sisters and brothers, E5 has established a committee to raise funds to construct an accessible entranceway and bathroom.
Occupy Boston has several offices at E5 and also recognizes the principle of accessibility. Many UJP and peace movement events are held at E5. Consequently, UJP is joining the campaign to raise funds for the E5 accessibility project which will not only create access but serve as an inspiring example of progressive organizations working together to achieve a greater good.
Bios of performers:
Rafael Medina, a singer/songwriter from Salta, a northern village of Argentina, will play a varied repertoire of powerful songs of struggle and hope from across the Latin American traditions. He co-organizes the Peñas Rebeldes, which are a monthly gathering of sharing music, poetry, and stories at encuentro5.
Gabrilla Ballard-Thakore, a recent transplant to Boston from New Orleans, will share her singer-songwriter creations. Gabrilla's music, an imaginative hybrid of her musical inspirations--from Bob Marley to Nina Simone - will delve into where she comes from and where she's going, not only as a musician, but as an activist and mother. Chris Nauman is a singer/songwriter from Arlington, MA. He creates music that is a vessel for social transformation. He has been on the music scene for many years playing venues as varied as peace rallies, coffeehouses and outdoor park concerts. Chris blends the intensity of Neil Young, the warmth of James Taylor, the energy of Bruce Springsteen and the sentiment of Pete Seeger into an engaging folk performance.
