Dear UJP Activist,
May has been a busy month, with protests around the world on behalf of peace and justice to celebrate May Day. UFPJ has been helping to build the anti-NATO demonstrations in Chicago, which are occurring this week. We are also mobilizing opposition to the $642 billion FY 2013 National Defense Authorization Act, that is on the House floor now.
The Legislative Working group is asking everyone to call their members of Congress and tell them to support for Barbara Lee's amendment ( #158) requiring the complete and rapid withdrawal of all US troops from Afghanistan, and urging them to Vote NO on the excessive $646 Billion Pentagon budget request!
Find out who should be representing you here. Then call the Capitol Switchboard today: 1-877-429-0678.
UFPJ will be out in force at the NATO Summits too, both at the counter summit and the IVAW March on Sunday. We hope to see you there!
In Struggle,
Michael McPhearson
National Coordinator

Defense Budget
$642 Billion for the Military? This Year? You must be kidding!
As the 2013 National Defense Authorization Bill hits the House floor, the American people should be going through the roof!
The FY 2013 military budget (NDAA) is up for a vote in the House this Friday. It contains more than $642 billion of taxpayer money to pay for a war the majority of Americans oppose; nuclear upgrades that threaten non-proliferation agreements; programs and weapons that even the Pentagon doesn’t want.
The bill also promotes reckless threats on Iran, enables reckless actions by Israel and prohibits the transfer of prisoners from Guantanamo to the United States.

Peace Action Montgomery Fights Back!
In his last speech to the nation as president, Dwight Eisenhower warned that the military-industrial complex would be “felt in every city, every statehouse.” He worried that the influence of military contractors would distort decision-making at all levels of government. Events in Montgomery County, MD -- just outside Washington, DC-- over the last couple of years show that Eisenhower’s concerns were well placed. The world headquarters of Lockheed Martin is located in the County, and the company believes that it deserves special tax rewards from County residents. Moreover, it has blocked citizen action to reprioritize Federal spending. Peace activists, led by Peace Action Montgomery, have fought back. Read More

TAs the largest financier of the U.S. coal industry, Bank of America should be called the “Bank of Coal.” So we decided to rename it. On May 4th, five RAN activists scaled Bank of America Stadium and dropped a 70′ x 25′ banner reading “Bank of America Coal.”
