What Is the New England EJ Summit?
The New England EJ Summit will connect community activists and residents, EJ advocates, lawyers, and policymakers from all six New England States who are interested in the environment and public health in low income communities and communities of color. Participants will learn about environmental justice topics in workshops led by community and other experts, and by meeting others who work on similar issues or share common concerns There will be opportunities to discuss environmental justice concerns with representatives of state environmentalagencies and federal agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The Summit will conclude with a discussion about whether to create a more formal environmental justice network in New England. Please come prepared to share your ideas and concerns.
What is the New England Environmental Justice Forum?
The Forum is comprised of many organizations and individuals that are working on environmental justice issues in New England. We are working to create a structured way for environmental justice activists and professionals in New England to come together, to share ideas, and learn from each other. The New England Environmental Justice Forum (NEEJF) brought together activists from southern New England at trainings held in Boston and Hartford, and will bring more people together at this day-long Environmental Justice Summit.
Who is Sponsoring the Summit?
NEEJF is a collaboration of Alternatives for Community & Environment, Connecticut Coalition for Environmental Justice and Rhode Island Legal Services. Also, NEEJF is a Bridgeport Environmental Justice Showcase Pilot Project funded by EPA to expand the capacity of environmental justice communities to address multimedia environmental health concerns.
Are Travel Scholarships Available?
A limited number of travel scholarships are available to cover the cost of one night of lodging (June 8th—without dinner) and traveling to the event such as renting cost of a van for several people or travel by bus or train. Lodging will be dormitory style on the Clark University campus— single rooms with a shared bath (without toiletries). Linens will be provided (or you can bring your own). You can apply for a scholarship when you register on line, before May 18, 2012. Preference for scholarships will be given to participants who must travel more than 2 hours, and to residents of low income communities or communities of color. Persons receiving scholarships will be notified by May 25, 2012.
