Hi, Mustafa and Eman and all my other beloved Palestinian friends in Gaza,
Our Fourth: we set up shop in front of the US Embassy today. Me, in support role of the Fasters, visited by many folks including from last year's Mavi Marmara, sung and drummed by Native Americans on the 'Phantom Boat'. Discovered nearby residence of American Ambassador and transferred our presence to the park across the street.
So as Israel continues to spread the siege of Gaza throughout the Mediterranean, our Captain went to court this morning for arraignment on charges among other of "disturbing the sea" and was subsequently detained until his court date Monday or Tuesday-- clearly another message to the other boats now blocked in their berths by Greek ships.
We are stuck at a military part of the Piraeus port. The guys here say they will now give us the list of what the inspectors are calling us on-- that we need to fix on the boat in order to continue our voyage. Cabinet has stated no boats from Greece can sail to Gaza; so maybe we will be off to Turkey?
I want to thank you all so much for all your notes, kisses, support. It is incredibly strengthening throughout this lengthy, lengthy wait. I pass your messages on and everyone really feels so supported by Boston and company. I think you would see us a using the time well. Yesterday a wonderful unveiling of 'The Audacity of Hope', a Beauty eager to get us underway. Since we have had an impossible time locating any international org., e.g.
I am writing this at 3:30am having just completed my third night watch. I thought I was quite formidable as only I, with my flashlight, stood at the stern defending "The Audacity of Hope" against Israel, the world's 4th strongest military armed by the U.S., world's strongest military... and, yes, against blackmailed, beleagured Greece. WOW... during my watch the police came by twice. We now seem be part of their routine patrol.
You may have noticed in the press: the Swedish boat had its propeller shaft cut...gives security a whole new meaning! Two heavily padded men with holsters arrived on our dock at 2:30am. We had a major stare down. We will double our shifts on 'watch' and probably add daytime duty; I am turning into a guard dog!
I am not sure if you have had a chance to keep up with all that is appearing in the press.....with the Flotilla is definitely setting the terms vis a vis State Department and Israel; even mainstream media is getting energized..
So, I have been frustratingly silent vis a vis contact with you because Israel and its accomplice, the US Gov is pulling all stops to stop 'The Audacity of Hope' and the Flotilla....Medea's article below is a good description and summary of of the 'lawfare' currently being waged on us.
Most exciting! we met 'The Audacity of Hope' - and what a beauty! I don't think anyone had expected our Mediterranean cruise to involve such a lovely little boat. Fresh paint, an airconditioner, enough toilets, no showers. it is well marked (no pics yet, as its location is secret... sure!.. already suspicious guests have tried to come on board), which is just as well since tody's State Department travel advisory basically disowns us.
I want to thank you all for the most embracing farewell I could ever imagine. I begin this journey to sail to Gaza with such an sense of inner peacefulness and strong resolve due in large part to the incredible support I have from you back home .I cannot begin to describe my gratitude knowing that I have such a strong, loving community behind me and want you to know that you are with me every step of this venture to break the blockade of Gaza
I just returned from four days in Washington DC at the Move Over AIPAC conference and am not sure if I return feeling more despondent by the incredible power of this Israel lobby or exhilarated by the solidarity of those trying to thwart its danger not only to US interests but also to the very existence of our 'democracy'.
So many apologies for not writing the final “I-am-home-email,” and thanks to the many inquiries regarding my whereabouts and welfare. I guess I had hoped to write a final, neatly-summarizing email which would nicely package my experience, but of course there is absolutely no concluding when it comes to Palestine, so it feels kind of impossible to summarize anything.
