Budget for All - Can you spend 2 hours this week?
This message is a general appeal for 2 hours of your time this weekend or next week from the American Friends Service Committee, Mass. Peace Action, the Right to the City Civic Action Alliance and 20 other peace, labor and community groups – the sponsors of the statewide “Budget for All” statewide referendum campaign. (www.budget4allmass.org)
We are now entering the final week in which to collect the signatures needed to place our message to congress and the president on the ballot in districts across Massachusetts. NO CUTS, INVEST IN JOBS, TAX THE 1%, GET OUT OF AFGHANISTAN NOW.
Our hardworking volunteers across the state have collected over 10,000 signatures. We are already on the ballot in 5 districts and are on track to complete another 13 districts -- giving 650,000 Massachusetts voters the opportunity to decide on the Budget for All agenda in November. But there are another 27 districts, representing 731,000 voters, that are possible and where we can make the ballot if we give it the old college try between now and the deadline, July 3.
We are now setting up teams of volunteers who can spend a few hours this weekend or next week. Most of these volunteers will go out near where they live. Others will be mobile teams who will move about the state, wherever a final push might put the referendum on the ballot in districts outside of Greater Boston. Volunteers will go to farmers markets, public libraries, supermarkets, and shopping centers. There you will encounter right wing lunatics, apathetic shoppers who don’t know what planet they live on – and some of the most caring human beings you will find anywhere, people who will restore your faith in humanity. We will provide the basic training needed to volunteers who are new to the cause.
If you can volunteer a few hours of your time sometime over the next 10 days, please send an email to Paul Shannon at email@example.com or Cole Harrison at firstname.lastname@example.org. Put “referendum volunteer” in the subject line and let us know the day and hours you can volunteer, where you live, a phone number, whether you have a car, and whether you can be deployed anywhere throughout the state or whether you prefer to work near where you live.
In this critical election year it is essential that we place our agenda before the people for their consideration and confront the austerity agenda coming out of Washington that will ruin the lives of millions and promise never ending war. The Budget for All referendum is one way for us to make our voices heard.
P.S. If you are unable to volunteer we still need you to come by the AFSC office in North Cambridge (2161 Massachusetts Ave 617-661-6130) or in Western Mass (2 Conz Street, Suite 2B Northampton, MA, 01060 413-584-8975) or Massachusetts Peace Action (11 Garden St., Cambridge, 617-354-2169) to sign the petition for your district – or better yet, take a petition to circulate in your neighborhood or place of work or worship. Signatures are no longer needed for Arlington, Newton, Brookline, or Dorchester because we have enough. Everywhere else is still in play.
